This philosophical tale from medieval Spain tells the story of a child who comes of age on an island, without the influence of any human society

“How to Find Yourself on a Deserted Island: Ibn Tufayl’s Philosophical Tale” was presented in partnership with the Seldon Institute.

During the winter quarter, participants discussed Hayy Ibn Yaqzan by Ibn Tufayl (d. 1185). This philosophical tale from medieval Spain told the story of a child who came of age on an island without the influence of human society and explored what a thoughtful person—absent any religious or cultural tradition—might conclude about God, the world, and humanity’s place in it.

The schedule was 6:00 p.m. dinner, 6:15 p.m. discussion, and 7:30 p.m. close.

The seminar met on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 22, Feb. 5, and Feb. 19 at Gavin House, home of the Lumen Christi Institute (1220 E 58th St).
